2022 is all about music. Aarhus will bear the title Music City and dedicates an entire year on doing the extraordinary – for the audience as well for the artists and employees behind the scenes. Music City Aarhus 2022 unifies the citizens, music operators and business community with music as the common denominator.
Music City Aarhus 2022 was decided in 2020 when a number of central operators from the aarhusian musical life gathered on the vision of a shared music city year. The cause of the gathering was the city’s already strong musical position on the national scene, diverse musical environment, great pool of talent and enormous potential of further strengthening of musical collaborations. 37% of the aarhusian population believe that culture is the essential reason for Aarhus being an attractive place to live, which adds on to the reasons that made Aarhus the obvious music city.
While the association Music City Aarhus was formed and initiated the realisation of the music city year the covid-19 pandemic took over society. The musical life was suspended and the music industry was forced to a hold. The Music City Aarhus 2022 project therefore formed a further vision; to restart the musical scene. These circumstances formed the ground that Music City Aarhus 2022 stands on to this day. In the autumn 2021 the idea of a whole year dediceted to music furthermore became a part of Aarhus Municipality’s culture politics 2021-2024, and that finally made Music City Aarhus 2022 a reality.
Music City Aarhus 2022 seeks to restart the musical and cultural life for the citizens, the business community and the musical operators in Aarhus after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Music City Aarhus 2022 seeks to build on the experiences from Aarhus 2017 European Capital of Culture and to create new common cultural experiences for the citizens of Aarhus that will become a part of the future musical and cultural frame of reference.

Four musical projects will have the possibility to be granted with each 250.000 kr. from the Gunnar and Kirsten Foundation in 2022 as they have decided to double this year’s donation in the name of music.
